Where do the beloved cheese breads come from?

The people of Minas Gerais defend cheese bread tooth and nail, and they are more than right to do so, since the bread has become a delicacy in Brazilian cuisine and especially in Minas Gerais.

It is estimated that it appeared around the 18th century, when farm cooks began using cassava flour instead of wheat flour.

This recipe, with the addition of tapioca flour and hardened cheese, was baked and transformed into the cheese breads we know today.

But historians also believe in another version of the story, that cheese bread appeared during slavery, when combinations of eggs and milk were made with cassava and cheese.

Oatmeal cheese bread recipe, how to prepare?

To prepare this delicious oatmeal cheese bread alternative, let's see what the ingredients are:

  • 1 cup of tea rolled oats;
  • 400g of grated white cheese;
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil;
  • 2 eggs;
  • 1 teaspoon of salt;
  • half a cup of boiling water;
  • 1 and a half cups of sour cassava starch.

Start by mixing the oats and grated cheese in a bowl. Once this is done, you can set it aside and move on to the next step.

The next step is to take another container or bowl, mix the sour cassava starch with the salt and add half a cup of boiling water. Using a spatula, stir carefully so as not to burn yourself.

When mixed well, set aside for 5 minutes until slightly warm, then add eggs, olive oil and mix again.

Once the ingredients are well incorporated, you should add the grated cheese and oats to the dough until it is very homogeneous, or as much as possible.

Now it's time to literally get your hands dirty, wet your hands and start making balls the size you want your cheese bread to be, and place them on a baking tray.

Bake in a preheated oven at approximately 180°C for at least 3 minutes or until golden brown. Then serve. See how simple it is?

The difference with this cheese bread is the oats, which can give the cheese bread a different texture, possibly making it denser and less elastic.

Oat cheese bread is an alternative and possibly healthier version of traditional cheese bread, with differences in flavor, texture, nutritional value and dietary considerations.

Cheese bread has deep roots in Brazilian culture, with influences that date back to indigenous peoples and the history of Brazil's colonization, and is very important to the identity of the people of Minas Gerais.
