Where does brigadeiro come from?

Brigadeiro is a completely Brazilian sweet, and it even has a day just for it: September 10th.

The story goes that our beloved sweet was created around 1946, by a confectioner from Rio de Janeiro called Heloísa Nabuco de Oliveira.

At the time, Heloísa created the sweet so that she could sell it and raise funds for the presidential campaign of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, who was a candidate for President of the Republic in 1945.

And the curiosities about this sweet don't stop there. Although it is popularly known as brigadeiro, in Rio Grande do Sul it is also called negrinho.

This is because Eduardo Gomes was running against Getúlio Vargas, who had strong support in the South of the country.

So, so that the term “brigadeiro” that was related to the candidate would not be used, they replaced it with “negrinho”, which was considered politically acceptable for media outlets that supported Getúlio Vargas.
